"To Mr. Harrell and all who had a role in bringing this needed program to the Virgin Islands, good morning and thank you, and good morning to all of your partners, sponsors and supporters. Most of all good morning and congratulations to the young people who are – with this project’s help and support – are going to take their lives and their futures into your own hands and say not only yes I can, but yes I will!

I know you can and will because over the years I have interacted with juvenile delinquents who are now college professors, drug users who are now living productive lives and raising healthy bright children of their own, pregnant teenagers who distinguished themselves in the armed forces, in nursing and other professions – all because sometimes only one, but often many affirmed their worth and their value; recognized their talent and their potential and cared enough to be their friend and their mentor.

“Bricks-n-Books” can do this for you!

You might build and you will learn – and more than just what is in your books. But you will also build your future and our communities’ future – brick by brick and book by book.

And so I encourage you to put your hearts and souls into this program and into yourselves not just now but throughout your lives.

When each and every one of you / of us are the best we can be the Virgin Islands too will be the best it can be.

I may not be with you in person today (snowbound in Washington DC), but I hope to be able to be with you during the course of this project and I do look forward to it.
